How to Make a Columnar Surname Index

By default, the surname index contains a list of surnames, by first character, that wrap around much like a paragraph of text will wrap:

Some users prefer a columnar presentation:

You can configure the site to use a columnar surname index by adding a User Style:

selector-1:
.gs-surname-list

parameters-1:
column-width: 8em; column-gap: 0.5em;

selector-2:
.gs-surname-list > li

parameters-2:
display: block; padding-right: 0; padding-left: 1em; text-indent: -1em;
