Overview

The Exhibit Gallery User Item creates a page (or pages) to hold a list of image exhibits. The list includes a thumbnail version of the image and the image caption. The exhibits can be filtered to create different sets of images.

When you add an Exhibit Gallery, you must enter a Title and a Filename. If you leave the remaining properties as-is, the gallery will include primary person images only. You may alter the Filter Tab properties to control which exhibits appear in the gallery. You may add filter terms on the Person Filter Tab to restrict whose exhibits are include. You may add multiple Exhibit Gallery User Items to create multiple galleries.

Gallery Properties

Title

The Title property defines the text of the heading that is added to the page, and also identifies the User Item in the User Items list.

Enabled

See Enabled in the Common Properties section of the User Items help page.

Filename

The Filename property determines the filename of the HTML page. Specify a filename only, i.e., do not include a filepath and do not include a filetype.

PageSet

The PageSet property determines the PageSet used for the page. The default is User Page.

The Menu property determines whether or not a link to the page is added to one or more of the site's menus. The Menu property defaults to "none". Change it to one of the other choices to make the item appear in a menu.

The Menu property is ignored when the page is not at the top-level (left-most) of User Items.

Images per Page

The Images per Page property determines how many images appear on a page of the gallery. If the gallery contains more images than will fit on a page, GedSite will create extra pages. It will append the page number to the Title and the Filename.

Sort

The Sort property determines the sequence of the items in the gallery. The default is by date. The choices are:

  • Caption — The items are sorted by the exhibit's caption. If an image does not have a caption, the title is used in place of the caption for sorting purposes.
  • Date — The items are sorted by the exhibit's date. The date is determined as described on the Exhibits page.
  • Filename — The items are sorted by the exhibit's filename.
  • Title — The items are sorted by the exhibit's title. The title is often the same as the caption, but may be different if the image file has a caption in the meta data.

Box Width

The Box Width property controls the width of the box that encloses the image and the caption. Setting Box Width and Thumb Width to the same value usually produces good results.

Box Height

The Box Height property controls the height of the box that encloses the image and the caption. If your exhibits include captions, set the Box Height at least 20 pixels greater than the Thumb Height to allow space for the caption text.

Thumb Width

The Thumb Width property controls the maximum width of the thumbnail image. Thumbnail widths will be adjusted by GedSite to maintain the aspect ratio of the original image, and so thumbnails created from tall images may be thinner than the Thumb Width setting.

Setting Thumb Width and Box Width to the same value usually produces good results.

Thumb Height

The Thumb height property controls the maximum height of the thumbnail image. Thumbnail heights will be adjusted by GedSite to maintain the aspect ratio of the original image, and so thumbnails created from wide images may be shorter than the Thumb Height setting.

If your exhibits include captions, set the Thumb Height at least 20 pixels less than the Box Height to allow space for the caption text.

Clear

See Clear in the Common Properties section of the User Items help page.

Class

The Class textbox allows you to specify the name of a CSS class that will be added to the Exhibit Gallery's container. You may use the class in the selector of a User Style to customize the appearance of the gallery.

Text Content Properties

Use the text content properties to add content before the images on an Exhibit Gallery page.

First Page Content

The First Page Content property adds text content to the first page of an Exhibit Gallery. This content is added before the images that appear on the page. Use the Edit > Open Editor... command (F7) to open an editor window that is suitable for editing multi-line text values.

All Pages Content

The All Pages Content property adds text content to all the pages of an Exhibit Gallery. This content is added after the First Page Content, if any, and before the images that appear on the page. Use the Edit > Open Editor... command (F7) to open an editor window that is suitable for editing multi-line text values.

Filter Tab

The Filter section properties determine which exhibits will be included in the gallery.

If no exhibits pass the filters, GedSite will produce an empty page.

Parent Record Filters

The Parent Record Filters select exhibits based on the parent record to which the exhibit is attached. When a parent record type is checked, exhibits attached to that type of record are eligible to be in the gallery.

At least one checkbox in the Parent Record Filters section must be checked or no exhibits will qualify.

Person Primary

For exhibits attached to person records, you may select exhibits based on whether or not the exhibit is primary.

If you set the Person Primary pull-down menu to PPrimary or Non-primary, then no filtering for primary / non-primary will apply: exhibits that are either primary or non-primary will be eligible.

If you set Person Primary to Primary only, then only primary exhibits will be eligible.

If you set Primary Tags to Non-primary only, then only non-primary exhibits will be eligible.

Text Filter

You may select exhibits based on the contents of these Exhibit fields:

  • Title
  • Caption
  • Note
  • Filename
  • File Path

For each text field, you select an operator and a text value to compare to the exhibit's value. The operators are shown below.

To be included, the exhibit must pass all the text filters that are defined by the user.

Operator Description
Starts with Includes an exhibit if the text field starts with the text in the Text property.
Does not start with Includes an exhibit if the text field does not start with the text in the Text property.
Contains Includes an exhibit if the text field includes the text in the Text property.
Does not contain Includes an exhibit if the text field does not include the text in the Text property.
Matches Includes an exhibit if the text field matches the Regular Expression pattern specified in the Text property.
Does not match Includes an exhibit if the text field does not match the Regular Expression pattern specified in the Text property.
Ends with Includes an exhibit if the text field ends with the text in the Text property.
Does not end with Includes an exhibit if the text field does not end with the text in the Text property.

All the text operators ignore character case. For example, if the Operator is "Starts with", the Text property is "the", and the exhibit field starts with "The", the exhibit is selected.

For The Master Genealogist, the Note Filter operates on the Exhibit Description text and uses the version of the text prior to hidden text being removed.

Person Filter Tab

Add Filter terms to the Person Filter to restrict the people whose person or tag exhibits will be included in the gallery.

The Person Filter only applies to exhibits attached to people or tags (names and events). Exhibits attached to citations, sources, or places are not restricted by the Person Filter.

For exhibits attached to people, the person must pass the Person Filter or the exhibit is ignored.

For exhibits attached to tags, at least one of the principals must pass the Person Filter or the exhibit is ignored. If one principal passes, and one or more fails, the exhibit is included.
